Takashi Murakami x Britney Spears x POP Magazine
The first thing that comes to mind when I see this is how recent the Lindsay Lohan X KAWS X Complex Magazine issue was. The two magazines generally go to two completely different demographics, but when they pull in Superflat artists, it brings the demographics a lot closer together. To me, it doesn’t seem as if Takashi Murakami had complete reign over the cover like KAWS did, as Takashi’s original compositions are a lot cleaner than this, but then again, the Takashi cover recycles Kaikai Kiki motifs, while the KAWS cover looks completely original. The only reason why I would prefer the POP magazine cover over the Complex cover is within the models. Lindsay Lohan is very uninteresting, and gives us very uninteresting poses in boring shots, in boring clothes. Complex expects males from 25-55 (gross to think about and type) to buy the magazine, and they gave them sex. Britney Spears, someone I find mildly more reclusive than Lindsay Lohan, is shot in a more interesting poses, ones that aren’t overtly and obtusely sexual, wearing interesting clothes, all of which can (so far) be credited to the photographer, Richard Prince. The POP cover, is aimed for a broader demographic, giving the viewer more art than sex. If only it weren’t for the obnoxious type cluttering the page, the POP magazine would have been quite the looker!
EDIT: Turns out the direction is by Takashi Murakami, and it was shot by Todd Cole. This changes my view of Murakami’s influence on the page. It went from Pop/Commercial art to Fine art in seconds. Funny how the credits can change my opinion.
Further proof that Damien Hirst Doesn’t Give A Fuck About Art”
I mean, Jeff Koons/KAWS much? But, we could’ve said that a year ago.
I mean, it’s one thing to market that one thing, but the more you chase that same thing, your abstractions will just become distractions. We know you’re only here for the money, any way you can get it. Sure, I understand that you, Damien Hirst, would claim artistic freedom, that no one creates in a bubble, and that the artists that your peers are inspiring and inspired by you, but this is the first “new” thing you’ve done in a decade, and everyone can see through your thinly veiled guise. No wonder your corporation has been suffering.
I’m not going to stand around while everyone praises you for some kind of god that you aren’t, because even Jesus was more than a one trick pony.
Jeff Koons, I’m on to you, too.
Typical hipster bullshit at work here: “Yeah, his earlier stuff was better.”
Get Rich or Die Tryin’ turned into Got Rich and Stopped Tryin’ again.
Can’t really call a man with a corporation a “sellout”, can we?
Yesterday, I started downloading photos of KAWS’s exhibitions to my phone. This morning, I learned that Rizzoli is releasing a KAWS book at the end of the year. I love Rizzoli’s quality. I own the A Bathing Ape® and ©Murakami Monograph’s, and knowing how deep they go, I really cannot wait for September.
Original Fake Earmuffs. I’ve been looking for a $100+ dollar solution to keep my ears warm in the winter.
Hopefully this census job pans out.
No, I will not recklessly spend my first paycheck on earmuffs, the way I should.
And so completes my wish list of recently released things of high aesthetic quality deemed so in the year 2010.
Shinfo:
The DJ AM Nike Dunk was a co release with DJ Premier. DJ Premier made sure these shoes got done in a timely fashion. DJ AM’s tribute shoe has a “wheels of steel” pattern embossed into patent leather, and apparently comes with three pairs of laces.
The Original Fake “X” hoody is the nicest designed Original Fake clothing item since his collaboration with Neighborhood. But all of the accessories have always wrecked.
Ibn Jasper’s 5-panel suede hat was designed with Kanye West’s “Air Yeezy” black colorway in mind, though the original shoe didn’t include this nice of materials. The suede on this hat looks incredibly lush.
I love the Marc Jacobs flash drive merely because small hard drives are so easy to lose. Also, I love the Marc Jacobs spin on it, even though it’s merely a few steps above Hot Topic design.
Eminem wearing Original Fake. FTW BTW.
Let’s think about this.
Medicom Toy Company

This is amazing.
J. Slater rips off KAWS. Email the asshole at slater_blue@yahoo.com
KAWS HAS DONE IT AGAIN!
They’ve made this really easy to find (RIGHT HERE!) as opposed to the i-D magazine he helped design last year.
KAWS is even on the CBS Sunday Morning Show
This video excites me. While I may not know any other KAWS fans personally, I’m glad to know that there are some out there.
To borrow from The Big Lebowski: “He’s the man for his time and place.”
